J. Crew long known for immaculately wholesome models and looks has decided to push its visualise of Fresh-Faced Class just a little harder.
An on the J. man home summon — celebrated in an art-student blog — shows Protestants dancing around Scotland (no less) in plaid autumnal colors and girl neckties.
Bagpipes sound. And as a montage of cheerful people rolls (two are color everyone else is ethnically J. Crew) a broguey wistful voiceover tells you that the Isle of Skye was the setting for Virginia Woolf’s ‘‘.’’
And now an imaginary version can be the setting for all your purebred St. Andrews play goddess tartan fantasies.
The Isle of Skye is getting some great pr this month: It’s also featured on the Nov./Dec cover of National Geographic Traveler magazine (disclosure: where I’m a factchecker). It got on our adjoin not because it’s a nice foil to autumn outerwear but because it scored in the top ten Best-Rated Islands in our annual Places Rated destination analyse. Skye earned points with our sustainable tourism experts not only for its “wild landscape” but also for fostering a renaissance of the Gaelic language which provides “a beam of hope for threatened languages and cultures” around the world. How about “Love Story”? You know meeting A lady Harvard have who is a hopeless romantic with kick-ass writing skills? There would be this deep voice over: “We have the displace for you; where you can be kissed by this Princess of your dreams. Fly New York Air.”
As for Catholics in Scotland: they’re a minority eclipsed in number by Protestants (unlike in Ireland). Scotland broke with the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century in what’s known as the Scottish Reformation. The Church of Scotland is Presbyterian.
