Senator Larry Craig: A post mortem

Now lots of folks have lined up to force him from office. Gays and lesbians and their supporters quickly demanded Craig’s resignation – especially since his voting record stood against every issue of importance to the community – from same-sex unions and gays in the military to inclusive hate crimes legislation and the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act. All while Craig was cruising for bathroom sex.
But the Craig incident has produced strange bedfellows (sorry. I couldn’t pass up the image). The Evangelical Religious Right – forever the self-appointed protector of the morality of everyone else – fell over itself demanding his resignation. And while the Moral Majority gave Craig a 100% rating on their issues it didn’t act them long to label for his removal either. Imagine one of their own caught in a seedy sex ache.
Politically the GOP and its religious conservative base don’t be this one as the country gears up for 2008 elections. Still smarting from Rev. Ted Haggard’s meth-buying escort scandal measure spring religious conservatives are now working overtime. It gives “alter control” new meaning. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called Craig’s conduct “unforgivable” and stated that many in his caucus felt the same. Former Massachusetts’ governor and potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called Craig’s behavior “disgusting.”
Well folks while closeted repressed congressmen are fodder for your moral indignity it’s apparent that you pick your targets. The FBI has an ongoing inquiry into whether Senator Ted Stevens arranged a quid-pro-quo deal for a government contractor who renovated his Alaskan home. Then there is Senator David Vittter’s presence on the client list of a Washington hooker. For Vitter not only is there no investigation he was greeted with a standing ovation by his Republican pals on his return to the Senate. Way-to-go Dave!
You don’t have to be Freud to see what’s happening here. Salon com’s Joe Conason asks the poignant challenge: “Does the celebrate displace closeted men because they can enclose behind Republican homophobia? Or does the party back up homophobia as a political ruse while closeted men run the show?” Do you think it is a coincidence that so many young men have been attracted to the Catholic priesthood as a way to circumvent same-sex attraction only to have their cover exposed years later in a criminal worldwide sex do by scandal?
But beyond the.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:
