Commentary: Open Letter to State News

State News’ editorial about the protests around the Nick Griffin event is uninformed and hypocritical. It’s coverage of the event left out many important facts including Griffin’s own statements and the presence of white supremacists at the event. First. I will address the editorial. The State News editorial board said there were other more respectful ways to protest. State News of course should know this. Protesters at other YAF events have used them but the State News didn’t find it important enough to report. The in which the anti-gay speaker gave a speech titled “The Born Gay Hoax” members of the LGBT community came out and held a silent protest. They also engaged the speaker in with several questions refuting his “facts”. Sorba was often flustered at the questions. At one point a protester who was also a health care worker challenged him on inaccurate statements he made on sex education. After botching a sex education metaphor involving a carrot and a horse he resorted to attacking her hygiene rather than answer the question. During the protesters staged another silent protest with a walkout a few minutes into the speech. That left five YAF members and few MSU administrators as the only ones in the room. For the State News to lecture protesters to do what they’ve already done is hypocritical. As for the disruption during the Griffin speech while it precluded Griffin’s planned speech it didn’t preclude two way communication. That was the opinion of Terry Denbow. Vice President of University Relations in an interview with Spartanedge com. Under the State News’s solution students would have no option to give real time reaction to the speech. State News also didn’t cover or seem to listen to Griffin’s own comments during the night. When Griffin made the claim that most interracial rapes occurred between black men on white women protesters challenged him. Griffin told one female protester to go to Detroit and walk down the streets. Griffin had also told another protester that she was pretty enough to be sold into Islamic sex slave markets. The State News should challenge those statements as well. The coverage of the event not only lacked what things Griffin had to say during the question and answer section it also failed to cover important facts. Before the event the racist website Stormfront had one it’s members called for an entourage to attend the event. Stormfront is a site popular with Neo-Nazis skinheads and the KKK. This was reported by the Detroit Free Press’s website on Friday. Not only was there a call from Stormfront the MC of the event. Preston Wiginton is a white supremacist that posts on Stormfront. He has claimed ties to skinheads and has said he takes them to events he runs. Wiginton and YAF Chair Kyle Bristow co-administered two Facebook groups together as well. State News had knowledge of this. I addressed the Board of Trustees meeting as well. The State News has failed in its duty to watch out for the public interest. It has condemned protesters but refuses to cover what it considers good protests on campus. This doesn’t let other students that oppose YAF know that there are people working to do the same thing. The State News also failed to let student know that not only did the event bring white supremacist to campus one of them was invited by YAF. In failing to report this the State News has endangered the university community through negligence. If the State News put in efforts to look at the YAF situation equal to that they put into reporting their own lawsuits against the university the university community would be safer better informed and in a better position to oppose YAF’s agenda of hate. You might also want to mention that the white supremacist MC also uttered racial slurs against African-Americans and Latinos. The second to the last video posted by Kyle Bristow shows Preston making those statements. You can also view that video on my blog. I hope YAF Watch will join my call for public figures and politicians to denouce Kyle Bristow for his hatred and association with white supremacists.
