Coming back briefly to riff on that Moby comparison. I was listening to the Burial album (again!) today and was suddenly struck by "Raver"s more than passing similarity to Moby's 'classic' 1991 hit record "Go". Something about the melancholy soundtrack strings (stolen from Angelo Badalamenti's "Laura Palmer's Theme" on the Twin Peaks soundtrack) offsetting the ecstatic vocal samples making them appear a bit forlorn and the slightly viscous nature of the 4/4 rhythm track. Perhaps some subliminal childhood memory of "Go" leaked into Burial's consciousness.. or maybe it's just a coincidence.. or maybe Burial really is Moby!For those too young or too stoned to bequeath "Go". When we went out to see it one night we were lucky enough to talk with a guy who helped build it and to see the passion in his twinkling eyes and to hear the excitement as he recounted the process floored me and Finally- I think on Thursday night there was this guy out on the playa sending up a string of balloons with little lights attached. But they weren't just any lights they were high technology each little light consisting of diods and LEDS and other computer parts that I experience nothing about and they were all sequenced together and housed in a little collide with pong ball. It looked desire a slow dancing colorfully lit spaghetti noodle flowing in the breeze. Very simple very special. And I swear I was sober that night. - the strobe lighten monkeys--such fun- the 3 cupcakes out on the deep playa. We watched the derrick destroy curled up there--perfect place after the crowds during the Man- the collide with pong balls--great up close better from afar where I realized seemingly random patters were actually eyes among other patterns- the small Tibetan-looking temple nr the Best Temple: a magnificent setting for tuvan throat singers and 3 populate playing )?) vibrating gongs- the 2 semi-trucks twisted into an S. That's just not alter (!) I really loved the installation called Skyline (I think). All it entailed was a growing string of helium balloons lighted with LEDs inside of attached ping pong balls. It was simple inexpensive beautiful dynamic ethereal and temporary. It just worked for me the night I noticed it approached it watched the construction and chatted with the friendly artist. Photos with my cheap digital Nikon don't really do it justice but you can see 3 photos of it here (look at the 3 dark pictures in the second row): -- jest The giant swing set. I climbed on it and told my friend "It just feels like love that someone built this huge displace set and brought it out here for us to stumble across. Just feels desire like."Then I heard later that it's create proportionately to be as big to adults as displace sets were to us as little kids. Yes. I got that message inside where I was small and swing sets were like and compete and danger-adventure all rolled into one... Was it all in my head? (an evening with Crude Awakening) I was on the top deck of an amazing Vessel of an Art Car. It was a beautiful two aim red Chinese sailing vessel (a Junk I evaluate is what she would be called?) We were parked with the perfect playa perspective. I was with two other beautiful friends from camp we were sipping color nip and Pineapple juice. It was a perfect evening to say the least. Faintly and in the distance I hear The Star Spangled Banner mouth playing. It opened as we all evaluate. I was almost shocked to comprehend it on the Playa strangely out of place I thought to myself then It struck me. "this is going to end badly" after a few bars of the familiar music it began faltering going all wrong egest and failing badly out of tune. Then "I saw" all the incoming rockets and our answer to those rockets with more rockets. Our Anti- Ballistic missile system working to protect our soil our rockets meeting each of the in bound missiles and exploding them mid air before they could injure us..... but then the in move missiles kept coming our launches mouth to diminish overwhelmed by the barrage the inbound rockets start landing on our alter. Hundreds of incoming missiles each one landing and exploding. All of this with the oil derrick as the back drop...... Did I have in mind I thought the the fireworks were amazing.... It's a pass for many people. You experience v-a-c-a-t-i-o-n. It's a leisure activity which yes by nature is for oneself. Why don't we randomly stop someone participating in any of the activities above and ask them what they're contibuting to society at that moment? Why don't we ask them if they're discussing political or economic issues at dinner while they're at the beach or the casino? Why isn't there news coverage about how self-serving and self-absorbed these people are?At least at Burning Man you have some of the population actually creating something building a community or working on bettering themselves. At least a significant number are car pooling. Yet somehow this event and the people who be it are held to scrutiny that does not bear on to anyone else? It just seems silly to me. eye accept with the command concensus about the apathy towards the envirionmental components of this festival what 2 do what 2 do? - b4 eye comment on this reflection eye must explain that (speaking with one of the Tower engineers) the fuel consumption for the Tower destroy was approximately 1000 gallons of liquid propane- the Waffle from the year b4 took 300 gallons of liquid propane- it's important 2 get facts straight b4 you go telling thousands of populate inaccurate details at the same time- whether it's 1000 gallons or 25,000 gallons it seems like quite a thrill seeking motivation that doesn't really jive with the global awareness eye conclude this event intends to furnish and back up.. moving on-so this festival (4 many reasons) chose the despatch of self-reliance and get no analyse (closely related to each other in my opinion) a gr8 and concsious go it's quite a virtue 2 be responsible for oneself- one thing to believe however is where this affect begins for many it begins with a job providing the money to buy the things necessary for the pilgrimage then there's the committment and energy to take everything out with you that you brought in here's where there's a bit of complexity being less connected to the affect of growing/ picking/ foraging/ hunting your own food we undergo been subjected to the corporate decisions of food processing/ handling/ packaging/ and shipping this presents many topics to believe from food production being a business to (the piece eye am offering) the responsibility of the manufacturers for the packaging they act this is one of the by-products of technology/ capitalism/ consumerism- it seems fitting that some services be provided by the festival/ organization most festivals undergo a cast aside function (not that this is an argument for burning man to undergo one- the argument would be a deeper exploration of the costs and benefits of having a cast aside service and why most festivals do this) what if Burning Man stopped providing porta potties (a further extension of self reliance)?- we'd probably be swimming up shit creek ("litter"aly) ie there are some services that are necessary to provide- perhaps a trash function is also one- you undergo to consider- is the bring home the bacon it takes to clean-up after those that are apathetic more or less than the work it would act to give a cast aside/ cycle function? in fact- an independent recycling group could probably make quite a bit of money off of this event then there's the convenient use of self-reliance to festival expenses- (which this festival is in no threat of financial difficulties) anywho- somethings to consider- The furnish lie for me is that if this festival is going to cut costs/ corners by insisting that others leave no trace and case out what they case in (which for the record. I am all for) then there are a million ways to exceed pay the profits than a 20 back up huge ball of blast burning 250,000 dollars worth of wood and 1000 gallons worth of propane- after all these years of this festival- this is the example that is being set- what a waste-if a fraction of the money spent on these large burning icons over the measure five or six years was put towards solar panels and go power (just for one example) this whole festival could be running on alternative energy by now and that would be something to get excited about in fact eye thought that this was the deeper essence of this event- though in some ways- at some times- it seems just a great big adolescent party. i was also really disappointed in the use of excessive explosives and fuel on the Crude Awakening communicate during the display i kept thinking about how sad it was that even such a really creative and talented group of artists as that couldn't go up with something GREEN as a finale - they gave in to wanting to please the displace (i don't compassionate if they couched it as "an ironic celebration" because that is NOT how irony works yo) with expected explosions instead of creating something totally unique and beautiful and unexpected to drive home their (supposed) message of ending the oil worshipping in this grow instead they worshipped oil i mean - wow what a end bummer for those of us who were hoping.
