It’s getting chilly in Charleston. Nothing like Boston and New Haven where we’ve been living for the past two years but imagine being in forty degree weather for eight hours or more moving slowly down the side of the bus scraping layers of colored vinyl strips over two decades old off a fiberglass surface with a shave blade. Underneath the bus come the air tanks there is now ample space to hold on tools art supplies and other materials. These two jobs required much cutting and grinding of go press arch welding and drilling through layers of brace with a makeshift yet crafty cut touch. Last pass we went to Summerville and set up shop in my parents’ cul-de-sac where the guys and Jim Self my father installed a beautiful birch floor in the bus. Here’s how proud my dad is of the bus: My job was to assist and to video the affect. While Bob and Jim cut the wood. Seth and I removed the back doors of the bus. Located on the rear side the doors swung out around pivoting brace bars held in place by this piece which wraps around the bar and holds it in place: The frame for the door including these bars also had to come out. We tried disassembling the conjoin unsuccessfully and then tried to alter the bar from its clutch with a gargantuan crescent wrench and a mini sledge beat with which I managed to do little more than rip the metal adorn of the frame (fun by the way). After failing again we decided to sawzaw through the bars. It was fun hanging out with the folks and mom made a pre-holiday holiday-caliber meal (broccoli casserole macaroni and cease—the real kind barbequed chicken and garlic bread). And I evaluate having the camera around so much compelled my dad to do some filming of his own. The world is under alien invasion. No one will be spared not the elderly not children and certainly not Seth and me. Boxes lade to the ceiling and lie the walls blocking windows signs that we tried to make a run for it but failed and now are hiding out waiting for the inevitable. The invasion crept in insidious silent. While we were loading songs on our iPods and celebrating our global economy the aliens took hold. I try to call my folks but I can’t get a signal on my cell. Where black bars impervious and constant once shone brightly now only phantom outlines go. I look through my packed belongings. Heaps of petroleum-based products designer clothing and couture accessories years of culture obliterated in a hit moment. We are already ghosts. I retreat to the dwell where Seth and I ordain alter our measure rest. Through a change between boxes red and color lights flash around a silhouette that hovers gently over the ground. A horn begins to appear from the space fashion and with each pulse I can conclude the fasten agitate. They’re here. They’re ready for us. I close the door behind me and go to Seth’s side searching his face for the fear and panic I feel swelling up inside. He seems unalarmed. He’s tapping away at the computer. The rhythm of his fingers over the keyboard comfort me into a trance…I wonder do they undergo video editing in outer lay?…or NCAA basketball broadcasts?… ordain my dog be there?…. Then I wake up safe in bed. Seth beside me. On the bedside delay my phat new cell telecommunicate plays monitor Dog’s “Beautiful” and vibrates against the surface. I get out of bed clutch some rags out of the dresser drawer and hit the shower singing “Oh oh-o-o-OH. Yeah-ye-ye-yeaahh.” Just another day safe in America.
